Basophils

Basophils (absolute and %) are a type of white blood cell measured in laboratory panels that reflect immune and inflammatory activity. Slightly higher basophil counts can suggest allergic reactions, chronic inflammation, or, less commonly, bone‑marrow disorders, while lower levels are generally not concerning and may simply reflect normal low baseline variability. Their numbers tend to rise during exposure to allergens, certain infections, or after taking medications such as antihistamines, and they can be modestly reduced by effective anti‑allergic treatment or resolution of an inflammatory episode. Because basophils normally constitute a very small fraction of leukocytes, any notable change should be interpreted in the broader clinical context.

What are basophils?

Basophils are one of five types of white blood cell, and the least common of the group. They form in your bone marrow and circulate in your bloodstream for a short time before moving into tissues. Basophils belong to the granulocyte family, which means their interior is packed with granules. Those granules store histamine, heparin, and other signaling chemicals. When basophils encounter an allergen or a parasite, they release these contents, driving inflammation, widening blood vessels, and recruiting other immune cells. This process helps defend against parasites and coordinates allergic reactions, but it is also what produces the swelling, itching, and congestion you feel during an allergic flare. Because they are so few, basophils are counted alongside the other white cells in a differential.

What is a normal basophil range?

As a share of your total white blood cells, basophils normally make up about 0.5% to 1%. What high basophils (basophilia) means

Basophilia means your absolute basophil count is elevated, generally above about 200 cells per microliter. Because basophils are usually so scarce, even a modest rise stands out and is worth understanding in context. The most common causes are reactive, meaning your body is responding to something. Allergic conditions, including asthma, hay fever, food allergies, and reactions to medications, can push basophils up. Chronic inflammation from autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease can do the same. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is another recognized cause, as are some infections. Less commonly, persistent basophilia can point to a bone marrow disorder. Chronic myeloid leukemia and other myeloproliferative neoplasms are associated with elevated basophils, which is why an unexplained or rising count draws closer attention. Basophilia often appears alongside eosinophilia in these settings. Basophilia itself usually causes no specific symptoms. Any symptoms you notice tend to come from the underlying cause, such as itching, hives, congestion, or fatigue. A single mildly high reading is rarely alarming. What low basophils (basopenia) means

Basopenia means a lower than expected basophil count. In practice it is difficult to detect and rarely meaningful on its own. Because the normal range already starts at zero, a result of 0.0 or a very low number often falls within normal limits. Standard blood analyzers are also less precise at counting such small numbers, so a low reading may simply reflect the limits of measurement rather than a true deficiency. When basopenia does reflect something real, it usually points to increased demand or suppression. Acute allergic reactions and acute infections can temporarily lower circulating basophils as the cells move into tissues. An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) is a recognized cause. So are states of high physiological stress and treatment with corticosteroids, which broadly reduce certain white blood cell populations. Because a low count is expected in many healthy people, basopenia is generally far less concerning than basophilia. It is seldom investigated in isolation. Do you accept HSA and FSA?*

Most members can use HSA or FSA funds for their OneTwenty membership. Your membership covers diagnostic lab testing and clinician review, which are generally eligible medical expenses, though final eligibility depends on your specific plan. If you pay with an HSA/FSA card, it works like any other card at checkout. If you don't have a card, or your plan requires documentation, we provide an itemized statement listing the services, the ordering provider, and the amount paid, which you submit to your plan administrator for reimbursement. We can't guarantee your plan's decision, so we recommend confirming with your administrator.

Do I have to take medications?

No, OneTwenty prioritizes natural interventions that escalate over time. We will start with lifestyle modifications, then supplements, and only then if needed do we prioritize medication intervention.

Is OneTwenty available in my state/country?

We are available in 49 states except for Rhode Island. In New York and New Jersey, there is an increased fee due to collection laws in place that don't allow us to use the Quest Network.

Is my health data secure? (HIPAA Standards)

Your privacy and security are foundational to OneTwenty. We run on infrastructure and software built to HIPAA security standards, and we apply the same core safeguards used to protect data in regulated healthcare settings: encryption in transit and at rest, strict role-based access controls, and full audit logging of who accesses your information and when. We never sell your personal health data. You decide what you connect and share, and you can request deletion of your data at any time.

What's included in my membership?

One year on the OneTwenty platform, which covers four lab draws: one comprehensive initial panel to set your baseline, and three custom follow-up panels based on your results. Any additional services are available separately at transparent pricing.

Why can't I use my insurance for these labs?

Currently, we do not support direct insurance billing for lab orders. We made this decision to protect our members from unexpected and excessive costs.

The "Medical Necessity" Requirement: Insurance companies typically only cover lab tests that are tied to a specific illness or diagnosis code (ICD-10). Because many of our panels are proactive and focused on longevity (preventive wellness) rather than treating an active sickness, they are frequently rejected by insurers as "investigational" or "not medically necessary."

The Cost Risk: If we submitted these orders to your insurance and they were denied, the lab would bill you their standard "retail price." This retail price can be 5x to 10x higher than the negotiated rates we have secured for you.

Our Solution: By operating on a self-pay basis, we guarantee you access to our heavily discounted wholesale rates, ensuring you know exactly what you are paying upfront with no surprise bills in the mail later.

We are working on it: We understand that using insurance is preferred for basic labs. We are actively working on a solution that will allow us to safely bill insurance for standard preventive tests while keeping advanced longevity markers separate. We hope to introduce this hybrid option in the future.
