Description
Blood Oxygen (SpO₂) estimates the percentage of hemoglobin in the blood that is carrying oxygen. It’s commonly measured by a finger pulse oximeter or by a wearable using optical sensors (light-based photoplethysmography). In most healthy adults at sea level, SpO₂ is typically in the mid-to-high 90s%.
Why it matters
SpO₂ is a simple way to understand whether oxygen delivery appears adequate—especially during sleep. Repeated drops overnight can be a clue for sleep-disordered breathing (like sleep apnea) or other issues that fragment sleep and reduce recovery.
What lower readings can suggest (general education)
Lower or frequently dipping SpO₂ patterns may be seen with:
- Sleep-disordered breathing (snoring, apneas)
- Respiratory illness or congestion
- High altitude
- Poor circulation or cold extremities
- Measurement artifact (very common with wearables)
Wearables: trends over single numbers
Wearable SpO₂ is best used for trends and patterns. Motion, poor sensor contact, cold fingers, nail polish, skin tone/algorithm differences, and device-specific limits can all affect accuracy. If a value is concerning, confirm with a medical-grade oximeter and clinical evaluation when appropriate.
